WannaBoats Team Every year, between the months of January and March, more than 2,000 humpback whales flock to the Samaná Bay to reproduce or give birth. In addition to enjoying a boat trip, you go to a protected marine reserve where whales and other cetaceans such as dolphins are concentrated. As you sail through the bay of Samaná, one of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic, you will be able to watch the whales doing some of their best acrobatics and listen to their courtship songs in search of mating.
The best season to see humpback whales in Samaná is from the beginning of January to the middle of March approx. Because the water temperature, above 26ºC, offers a perfect warm environment for mating and the birth of the young, which lack the protective fat layer that adult whales have. But we must not forget that nature and animals are unpredictable, so we may find some at another time of year.

Every year we receive humpback whales in the Bay of Samaná. But … why do the whales come? It is very simple, they come because in the bay they find favorable conditions for their reproductive activity.
In addition to the optimal temperature, shallow bottoms, waters protected from adverse sea conditions and predators, the whales find something fundamental in the bay: tranquility. There is another factor that makes whales choose Samaná as their destination to mate or give birth, the absence of large noisy and polluting industries and the absence of maritime traffic of large boats.
